It is thin steel as other reviewers have pointed out, but likely thick enough to hold some weight. However, I'm not sure I would put the full weight that is advertised on this shelving unit.The unit is comprised of: 8 vertical posts (4 for the bottom half, 4 for the top) 10 horizontal shelf depth braces (for the left and right sides of the shelves) 10 horizontal shelf width braces (for the fronts and backs of the shelves) 4 plastic clips to hold the top half onto the bottom half 8 plastic clips that finish the tops and bottoms of the vertical postsThe horizontal shelving braces basically tie the 4 vertical posts together, so you end up with a top half and a bottom half. They are connected by knobs on the braces that stick into holes on the vertical posts and hammered down with the supplied hammer.The biggest problem is that the entire top half of the unit is only snapped into the bottom half by these 4 little plastic L clips that fit inside the thin walls of the vertical posts. The clips are not particularly tight, so the top can easily wobble out while you are moving it or if it's jostled.If you have weight on the top shelves, that'll likely hold it down, but you may want to fasten the whole thing to a wall. I would not put this shelving unit anywhere that kids have access to it.That said, it's cost effective and looks good. For the right purpose it's not a bad item. I have two of them side by side in my office.I may make my own reinforcements to tie the top halves together using a couple small flat pieces of steel with either small bolts or self tapping screws.This item was a little tricky to put together to start. Once it was together, it wasn’t very straight and sturdy. I wouldn’t buy it again.I like the overall look of the rack. It is easy to assemble. Seems to be pretty sturdy. I should have taken a bit more time to look at the shelf adjustment limitation. I took for granted that there would be a separate bracket to join the two halves. Unfortunately, there is not. Therefore, you must use one of the shelves to join the two halves together. Because of this there are limitations on being able to adjust the shelves to your personal needs as the middle shelf cannot be moved. It must stay in the middle to keep the two halves joined.This is a well-made, sturdy set of shelves. It wasn't what I expected. It was far better. Assembly was very simple in under 30 minutes. Added bonus is the shelve is actually a set of two short shelves that are stacked.I initially purchased one of these to tidy up my garage and get organised, and it was great, pretty solid and easy to put together, so I purchased another. Big mistake. The second one turned up in a badly taped up box and I immediately knew something was up and suspected there’d be parts missing, and low and behold I was right. A bag of attachments and the mallet was missing rendering the thing pretty much useless.Then comes the Amazon returns process. I can return it, but I have to organise its return and somehow get this large heavy box to the post office or an Amazon centre, which is something I am not able to do. So now I have a shelving rack that’s incomplete and useless, no easy way to return it and it’s cost me $130. What I find most frustrating, aside from the returns process, is the fact somebody at Raybee sent this out without checking the contents first. It tells me all I need to know about that company.If I were you I’d maybe consider buying a rack from a different company, which is what I now intend to do.Easy to Assemble, and holds a lot of weight. Highly recommend.I'm puzzled by some of the reviews I've seen that claim this unit was difficult to assemble. Working alone and at a leisurely pace, I assembled it in less than an hour. The parts literally snap together. The finished product is reasonably attractive and serves its purpose in my garage. It's not a super heavy-weight shelving unit, but it looks like it will support most typical homeowner requirements. Highly recommended.After this experience, we’ve decided we’re better off looking for a product in person rather than buying online. Although relatively easy to assemble, the perks really stop there. The shelf doesn’t offer as much storage space as we would have liked for the cost. Additionally, the shelf is incredibly wobbly/unbalanced. Since this is something we need right now, we are having to make due by leveling it out with cardboard.Decent product overall, but we will not be purchasing again.
